So, the next time anxiety comes knocking, try to see it not as an enemy, but as a concerned friend trying to protect you. Here are a few ways to reframe your relationship with anxiety and harness its protective power:

1️⃣ Acknowledge the Message: Instead of pushing anxiety away, listen to what it's trying to tell you. Is there a specific situation or thought that's triggering it?

Ever wonder if therapists get triggered? The answer is YES!! Between clients, I often need a quick, effective way to regulate my nervous system. Often, I'll discharge some energy first by crying, screaming into a pillow, or doing some jumping jacks. Here's what I do next:

1️⃣ I Close My Eyes: This simple act allows me to bring my attention inward and take in less stimuli. It helps me get in my body and out of my head, creating a calm, focused state.

2️⃣ Do a Regulating Hug: This touch speaks the language of the nervous system, communicating safety and activating the parasympathetic system. Holding yourself gently sends signals to your brain that you are safe, which can lower stress and anxiety.

3️⃣ Sway Side to Side: Swaying has a calming effect on the nervous system. The rhythmic motion mimics the comforting sensation of being rocked as a child, promoting a sense of security and relaxation.

4️⃣ Focus on Deep Breaths: This might be the most important step of all. Deep breathing impacts your nervous system by activating the vagus nerve, which helps to lower heart rate and blood pressure. Elongating your exhales communicates to your brain that you are safe, further promoting relaxation.

Taking these steps helps me stay grounded and present, allowing me to be the best support for my clients. Try incorporating these techniques into your routine and notice the difference in how you feel!
