What does a regulated nervous system actually feel like?

It’s not just feeling “calm.” It’s feeling safe, connected, and grounded, inside and out:

1️⃣ You feel present in the moment, not stuck replaying the past or anxiously bracing for what’s next.

2️⃣ You can move through a range of emotions (sadness, anger, joy) without shutting down or becoming overwhelmed.

3️⃣ You can access curiosity, playfulness, and creativity, opening your mind to new possibilities and ways of being.

These are all signs your body is in a regulated state, sometimes called ventral vagal activation: a place of safety and social engagement where healing, learning, and growth can happen. 🦋

🛑 It doesn’t mean you have to live in this state all the time. Nobody does. What truly matters is your ability to gently return to this state again and again, even after feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or shut down.

This process of returning, little by little, moment by moment, is where your healing and resilience grow.

Fear is a built-in survival response designed to keep you safe. When your nervous system detects a threat (real or perceived), it sends signals to help you react - fast. That’s why your heart races, your breath quickens, or you feel the urge to run or freeze. 🌀

But sometimes, especially with trauma or chronic anxiety, fear can become overactive, warning you even when you’re not in immediate danger.

The goal isn’t to get rid of fear - it’s to understand it and work with your body so it feels safe again. ☮️

When fear shows up, try asking:

🌿 What might this part of me be trying to protect?
🌿 Is this fear coming from the past or the present?
🌿 What does my body need right now to feel grounded?
